| Tutoring 101-What Students Need to Know |
Our tutors | • are degreed professionals who have undergone tutor training for College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) tutor certification. |
• lead students to become independent learners by helping them identify ways to use available resources, their class notes, textbooks, etc. to increase understanding of course material. |
• ask questions and use active listening skills, such as mirroring and reflecting, and demonstrate techniques for improvement. |
• help students learn to identify and correct academic and life skill problems. |
• are friendly, respect confidentiality and honor student rights to privacy. |
Our tutors will not | • criticize an instructor, Lone Star College–Tomball processes and procedures or students. |
• correct all mistakes on papers or homework. |
• think for the students. |
• offer opinions concerning grades. |
• do the work for students. |
Students should | • be prepared to LEARN – Students are responsible for what they learn and what they want to accomplish during a tutoring session. Bring with you all relevant assignments, papers, or books. |
• be prepared to WRITE - Students learn more from doing than from just listening. Taking notes and highlighting sections of the textbook are all ways to improve understanding. |
• be prepared to TALK - Students need to actively participate by asking questions and restating concepts and facts. Tutors do not think for students. Instead, they ask students questions and help them figure out answers. |
Commitment Equals Success | • Remember improvement takes time and practice. A single tutoring session does not make a better student . For the most part, students realize greatest success by meeting weekly with the tutor throughout the semester. |
• In the final analysis, it is the student's preparation and willingness to work that determine academic success. |
